"Web-Slinging Sensation: 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Breaks Box Office Records"

The incredible box office run of Marvel's latest cinematic sensation, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," shows no signs of slowing down. In its second weekend in theaters, the film raked in an astonishing $145 million domestically, solidifying its position as one of the year's most successful movies. To put these impressive ticket sales into perspective, only one movie this year – Disney and Pixar's "Toy Story 5" – earned around that much in its opening weekend, with a staggering $159 million. "Brand New Day" now holds the third-biggest second weekend of all time, trailing only behind 2015's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and 2019's "Avengers: Endgame." With an opening domestic gross of $355 million and a global total of $932 million, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has already generated a staggering $655 million in North America and $1.67 billion globally. The film is on track to become the first movie to ever reach $1 billion at the domestic box office and join an elite club of films to hit $3 billion worldwide. Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan's epic "The Odyssey" continues its reign over domestic box offices, earning $31.5 million in its fourth weekend. With a global haul of $1.1 billion, the movie has officially become Nolan's highest-grossing film to date, surpassing the records set by "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Dark Knight." The film's success is particularly notable given its nearly three-hour running time and adult-skewing content. In a competitive market, three new films opened nationwide to mixed results. Universal's raucous romantic comedy "One Night Only," starring Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro, debuted below expectations with $5.7 million from 3,012 theaters. Director Will Gluck's prior film, 2023's "Anyone But You," opened to a similar figure but went on to become a sleeper hit, earning over $88 million domestically and $220 million globally. "Super Troopers 3" launched at No. 4 with $4 million from 2,760 venues, marking the lowest start in the comedy trilogy's history. The film's critical reception was mixed, with audiences and critics giving it a "B-" grade on CinemaScore and a 48% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Director Eli Roth's slasher flick "Ice Cream Man" scraped together $2 million from 1,671 screens, landing in eighth place. The film was self-distributed by Roth through his indie company The Horror Section and received a lukewarm reception from both critics and audiences. In limited release, several indie films impressed on just a few screens. A24's coming-of-age story "Tony," directed by Matt Johnson and starring Dominic Sessa as a young Anthony Bourdain, served up one of the best screen averages of the year with $58,159 per location in New York City and Los Angeles. The film's commercial appeal will be tested as A24 continues to roll it out nationwide. "Teenage Sex and Death and Camp Miasma," directed by Jane Schoenbrun and starring Gillian Anderson, earned $50,300 per location from five screens. Nearly 80% of audiences were under 35, while half were under 25 years old, according to exit polls. The well-reviewed movie revolves around a filmmaker who is hired to direct a reboot of a slasher franchise. Finally, "Late Fame," directed by Kent Jones and starring Willem Dafoe, brought in $19,000 per venue at two theaters, New York's Film Forum and Film at Lincoln Center. The film follows a former poet who befriends a group of young artists. Next weekend will bring a fresh batch of wide releases, including Warner Bros.' sci-fi mystery "The End of Oak Street" with Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, Paramount's "PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie," and Black Bear's "The Rivals of Amziah King" starring Matthew McConaughey. However, it remains to be seen if any of these films can dethrone Spider-Man at the top of the box office charts.
