Mahesh Babu's Stunning Transformation for S.S. Rajamouli's "Varanasi" Revealed

Fans of Mahesh Babu were treated to a special birthday surprise this past Sunday, as the first look images from his highly anticipated film "Varanasi," directed by the legendary S.S. Rajamouli, were unveiled. The stunning photos showcase Babu's powerful portrayal of dual roles – one as Rudhra, a modern-day protagonist, and the other as Hindu God Rama, in this epic tale that spans thousands of years and traverses multiple continents. The film, which also features Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Mandakini and Prithviraj Sukumaran as the main antagonist Kumbha, boasts a diverse range of locations – from Antarctica to Africa to the titular Indian city. The images were captured on-location in Tanzania's Kilimanjaro and Maasai Mara regions, providing a breathtaking backdrop for Babu's charismatic performance. In one photo, Babu is seen reclining on a bamboo raft amidst lush greenery, sporting an olive-toned shirt, cargo trousers, and a full beard that perfectly complements his tousled curly hair. The second image captures him in profile against the African savannah, with majestic giraffes and zebras gracing the background. Rajamouli described Babu's compelling portrayal of Rudhra, stating: "Rudhra was born to fulfill a destiny much larger than himself. He carries a burden he did not ask for. He is witty, vulnerable, and fierce – qualities that Mahesh effortlessly embodies." The director also shared his awe of the African landscape during filming: "These frames are from our Africa schedule, and the land offered us something no set ever could. Shooting around Kilimanjaro and in the Masai Mara left me speechless. There were mornings when even the 1.43:1 Imax frame struggled to contain what lay before us." The character reveals continue as part of a series, with images of Priyanka Chopra Jonas previously released on her birthday. Babu himself spent a year meticulously preparing for his roles, undergoing intense Kalari martial arts training to adjust his posture and adapting his running style through months of track and field training. "Varanasi" serves as Rajamouli's follow-up to the Academy Award-winning "RRR," with M.M. Keeravani returning to score the new film. Mark your calendars, as "Varanasi" is set to hit theaters worldwide on April 7, 2027.
