Beloved 'Dukes of Hazzard' Star Ben Jones Passes Away at 84

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the world bid farewell to actor and former congressman Ben Jones on Sunday. His wife, Alma Viator, announced the news via Facebook, sharing a touching photo of Jones with his cherished dog. Jones reportedly suffered a massive heart attack while waiting for the Atlanta Braves game to begin in the comfort of his favorite chair. Jones, best recognized as Cooter Davenport on the iconic television series "The Dukes of Hazzard," left an indelible mark on audiences during the show's seven-season run from 1979 to 1985. However, his career extended beyond Hazzard County, encompassing roles in popular TV shows and films such as "Smokey and the Bandit," "Moonrunners," and "As the World Turns." After hanging up his acting hat, Jones stepped into the political arena, running for Congress in Georgia's Fourth Congressional District in 1988. He won and served until 1994 when he lost to Newt Gingrich. Tom Wopat, who played Luke Duke alongside John Schneider's Bo Duke on "The Dukes of Hazzard," was among the first to express his condolences following Jones' passing. "We lost another integral part of our 'Dukes of Hazzard' family today. Ben Jones was a dear friend and a staunch advocate for all the best values that the entertainment industry has to offer," Wopat wrote on Facebook. "He will be greatly missed... Denver Pyle frequently said to Ben, 'I'm not your Uncle Jesse!' But I feel like we lost a Duke cousin today," Wopat added, reflecting on the deep bonds forged during their time together on the beloved series. First airing in 1979 on CBS, "The Dukes of Hazzard" remained immensely popular. It was reimagined as an action comedy film in 2005, featuring Jessica Simpson, Johnny Knoxville, and Seann William Scott in leading roles.
