Bel Powley Speaks Out Against J.K. Rowling's Transphobic Views Ahead of Harry Potter Reboot

British actress Bel Powley, who is set to join the star-studded cast of HBO Max's upcoming Harry Potter series, has made a bold stand against author J.K. Rowling's controversial views on transgender issues. In an exclusive interview with The Telegraph, the 34-year-old Morning Show star expressed her disagreement with Rowling's stance on gender and expressed support for the trans community. "I strongly disagree with J.K. Rowling's views on gender," Powley told The Telegraph. "The trans community deserves safety, dignity, respect, and total acceptance." Despite her opposition to Rowling's beliefs, Powley shared her affection for the iconic Harry Potter series, having grown up reading the books as a part of the first generation of readers. Rowling's comments targeting the trans community have caused widespread controversy over the years, including her support for anti-trans laws and her use of controversial language on social media. In June 2020, she wrote via Twitter, "‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?" Her comments have led many Harry Potter stars to speak out in defense of the trans community. Daniel Radcliffe, Eddie Redmayne, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, among others, have all condemned Rowling's views and called for greater understanding and acceptance of trans individuals. Powley remains hopeful that viewers will still find magic and wonder in the upcoming Harry Potter series, despite Rowling's anti-trans views. "I believe that energy doesn't disappear," she said. "The world doesn't get lighter if someone dies, does it? The energy shifts into the trees and the grass and the sky, and I find that quite comforting." Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is set to premiere on HBO Max Christmas 2026. As a subscriber to the streaming service, fans will have exclusive access to the highly anticipated reboot.
